Why are there so many bears in fashion? From the Teddy Bear to streetwear

Jose Antonio Carravilla Blanco

The teddy bear seems like an odd symbol to end up stamped on t-shirts, sweatshirts, and streetwear. However, it has been appearing in fashion for decades and some brands have even made it part of their identity.

What is it about the Teddy Bear that makes it work so well on clothing?

Where does the name Teddy Bear come from?

The origin of the Teddy Bear dates back to the early 20th century and is related to Theodore Roosevelt. In 1902, the American president refused to shoot a bear that had been captured during a hunt. The episode inspired a famous cartoon, and shortly after, teddy bears associated with the name "Teddy" began to be sold.

Over time, the Teddy Bear stopped being just a toy. Its silhouette became a recognizable symbol associated with childhood, nostalgia, and protection.

And that is precisely where its relationship with fashion begins.

The bear also became a character

One of the keys to its success is that a bear can adopt practically any personality.

Ralph Lauren proved this with his Polo Bear, which began appearing on the brand's clothing in the early 90s dressed in different styles. The bear could be elegant, sporty, collegiate, or adventurous.

Other brands have also used this resource. Moschino, for example, has turned its Teddy Bear into a recurring motif on t-shirts, sweatshirts, and accessories.

The result is simple: the bear acts almost like a character that can be dressed up, transformed, and given attitude.

What does the Teddy Bear have to do with streetwear?

Streetwear has been incorporating elements from toys, cartoons, graffiti, video games, and pop culture for decades.

One of the best examples is Bearbrick, the bear-headed figure created by Medicom in 2001. Its design works like a canvas on which artists, designers, and brands create completely different versions.

The idea is very similar to what happens with a graphic t-shirt: starting with an image that everyone recognizes and transforming it through different colors, messages, and styles.

Why does a rebellious Teddy Bear work so well?

Because it creates an immediate visual contrast.

We expect a teddy bear to be adorable. If it appears tattooed, surrounded by graffiti, dressed as a punk, or with a defiant attitude, something unexpected happens.

And precisely that mix of innocence and rebellion makes the design striking.

The same bear can convey humor, nostalgia, rebellion, or urban attitude depending on how it is represented. That is why there are elegant, punk, hip-hop, graffiti, retro, colorful, or even dark Teddy Bears.

From the classic Teddy Bear to the urban bear

More than a century after its appearance, the bear continues to work in fashion because it is a universal figure and very easy to reinterpret.

It can be cute or irreverent, classic or street, minimalist or exaggerated.

At SO Wear, we also play with that transformation, taking the Teddy Bear toward graffiti, punk, pixel art, and other urban graphic styles.
